World Drinking Chocolate Competition, 2022

Lieu: Hannover, Germany
Date de clôture: août 24, 2022
Dates d’évaluation: septembre 7, 2022 – septembre 25, 2022

Before the chocolate bar, there was the drink …

With the return of our World Drinking Chocolate competition for 2022, we celebrate the original liquid format of chocolate, its revival as a high-end beverage and the importance of drinks in the history of chocolate.

Our expert panel of culinary judges will be preparing the 2022 entries in their own homes and professional kitchens using the entrants’ recipes. They will be looking for drinks made with great cacao and chocolate, with good balance and a recipe that creates the best flavor, texture and mouthfeel.

Following the success of the 2020 competition during the pandemic lockdowns, samples will be received by Chocolats-de-luxe.de, our European partner, in Hannover, Germany, and then will be repacked and sent out to our remote judging panel of Grand Jury and senior judges.

The Drinking Chocolate competition will judge drinks made with chocolate, chocolate preparations, cocoa powder mixes, infusions, products made from the cacao pulp or fruit and alcoholic drinks made with chocolate or cacao.

Cacao sourcing and traceability

For 2021-22 onwards we are now asking for full traceability for the cacao used in all competition entries, to celebrate and champion the chocolate makers and companies using cacao with an identifiable and traceable source.

We will now only accept dark and milk chocolate in any category that has a declared and traceable source for the cacao. Couverture and blends are still acceptable, provided that the source of each cacao used is also declared. Entrants will need to declare the cacao source(s) for each product they enter. The sourcing information can either be public or declared in confidence with the Awards. (Note: this rule does not currently apply to white chocolate or cocoa butter).

This change brings the Drinking Chocolate competition in line with our bean-to-bar competitions, and we are proud to celebrate and support the work of the growers, chocolate makers and all the supporting industries working to produce the world’s best chocolate products.

Éligibilité

The 2022 Drinking Chocolate competition is open to all chocolate companies around the World. Our normal rules apply about all-natural ingredients and minimum percentages. Please see our “Categories and Rules” PDF for details.

Products entered in the competition must be available for retail sale in a form that consumers can take away and prepare or consume at home. Products must be on sale for at least one month in 2022.

Recipe: To ensure standardised judging by our experienced judging panel preparing their own samples, you must provide a recommended recipe for your product, including recommended fat percentages and type of milk (including plant-based alternatives), if used, and for sweetening if required. How a drinking chocolate is made can be as important as the quality of the chocolate and other ingredients, so you are advised to provide a specific and well thought out recipe to be sure your product is consumed in the best possible format.

Please note, the only ingredients our judges can provide are: water, milk (including plant-based alternatives where available) and cream, heated as directed, and standard cane sugar if required. All other ingredients required for the recipe must be part of the retail drinking chocolate product.

Short-life drinks, eg ganache based

Unfortunately, due to the remote format of judging and seasonal conditions, we cannot accept entries of ready-made or fresh short-life products that will need to be opened during preparation, unless you can submit individual sealed containers of not more than 400ml for each judge. Please contact us for more details if you are not sure.

Customs: To make sure that your entries reach us quickly and without problems, please ensure you use the correct customs information and product tariff codes, which we will send you after your entries are approved. Milk powder – important: the EU is now enforcing stricter rules on the origin of dairy products imported into the EU. To avoid problems, please include details of the origin of milk powder or other dairy in the ingredients list for each product.

Le prix d’admission à cette compétition s’élève à EUR €55 et les frais de participation s’élèvent à EUR €55. Les prix seront convertis en monnaie locale par la carte de crédit de votre entreprise, si nécessaire.
