European, Middle Eastern and African Bean-to-Bar Competition, 2020

Due to the special situation with the COVID-19 coronavirus affecting events in Europe, the European, Middle Eastern and African Bean-to-bar Competition will be judged this year by remote judging only.

This is a difficult time for the world, for business and for chocolate, but we want to continue to support the fine and craft chocolate world during this challenging situation – and hopefully provide some good news for fine chocolate, helping to celebrate and support the work of small craft and fine chocolate makers and to help to promote the best in chocolate.

Remote judging

Our German partner for the DACH (German, Austrian, Swiss) competition CHOCOLATS-DE-LUXE.DE GmbH in Hannover has stepped in to receive products for this year’s competition, which will then be repacked as blinded samples and sent to our panel of international judges and Grand Jury to judge at home using our online judging system. We have been using remote judging for initial stages of some of our competitions since 2018, including the European competiton, so we are confident that this system will allow us to maintain a high quality of judging. Reference sets of each submission will be held at the receiving venue in case of any issue with the samples sent to judges and products will be blinded as usual.

Judging will commence once all the samples have been packed, after the deadline to receive samples of 30 April 2020. Judging will take place during May and we hope to announce the winners in June. Unfortunately at this time we are unable to say if we’ll be able to hold a ceremony for this competition, but we are looking at options in the autumn season if the situation has improved by then.

Entry fees and quantities

To help support our entrants, we are waiving the registration fee of €55 Euros, so it will now be free to register and you will only pay the fee for each product entered. We are also reducing the quantities required to 300 grams of bars in total for each product entered.

This competition is exclusively for Bean-to-bar/Chocolate maker plain/origin and flavoured bars produced in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

Winners of this competition will pass through to the World Final, which will be held later in the year, with the timing depending on the ongoing situation.

New: Ingredients categories

This competition now includes cocoa powder and butter made by craft chocolate makers. Please register as normal and choose the new ‘Ingredients’ product type. Products should be available for retail sale to consumers or wholesale for at least one month during the year of the competition.

This competition is exclusively for Bean-to-Bar/Chocolate Maker plain/origin and flavoured bars produced in Europe, the Middle East and Africa

The competition is open to all companies whose main business or head office is based in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

De deelnamekosten voor deze wedstrijd bedragen EUR €0 en de kosten voor elke inschrijving bedragen EUR €50. De kosten worden door uw creditcardmaatschappij, indien nodig, omgezet in de plaatselijke valuta.
